    Wowzie!

Opus Dei conference centre…can’t see the line up but it looks like Eamon Ryan and Jeffrey Donaldson.

Might be washing my hair that day.

The conference is okay, but the venue is peculiar – I don’t get the connection. Opus Dei is not renowned for its openness , so why all this interest in the media – is it that it would like to control it?

I spoke at this conference a few years ago. I think they are attempting to stimulate the concept and reflection of ethics in the media. A necessary and worthy project. It’s not about control but an attempt to get extremely influential people in the meeja to think about the ethical side of their job…From my experience there was absolutely no attempt to impose any kind of agenda; speakers with very liberal views were invited and the only goal was to get people thinking about the responsibilities of their job. I approve of it entirely!

    HI Paul

I’m really torn. Look, the past few years saw a lot of us get money that we weren’t morally entitled to. The increases in child benefit were massive. The automatic medical card for the over 70’s was wrong. We do pay low income tax relative to other countries. If some of that is rolled back then I can handle it and I don’t mind paying my way.
It IS deeply frustrating though that so much money was wasted in the past few years. Decentralisation instead of more primary schools. Tax incentives creating property madness and now, it is has to be paid for by the 1% levy on the low paid. But I’m with the 60% of people who didn’t vote for FF for the past few years, so I have to accept that THOSE people [ie the FnFers] put us where we are now and I don’t want to hear one single whine out of them.
It would make it much easier to swallow if there was a tax on private jets and the number of days per year that a tax exile can spend in the country was significantly reduced. Lenihan says we should all pay. Good. So let’s ALL pay……

Glad to see that someone else has copped the exemption for private jets.

The €10 air tax doesn’t apply to planes that have less than 20 passenger seats. Could this mean that borrowing my friends private jet to fly to my holiday home in the Caribbean will work out cheaper than a package holiday to the Canaries?

Sarah, I’ve been very pro decentralisation for the very reason that I see sizeable rural towns with populations of one thousand and greater dying while Dublin keeps on expanding – a solution has to be found and decentralisation was, at least, a start, If the new road network were in place – but it’s still way behind schedule – then what would be wrong with the wealth dispersion model. Something has to be done or otherwise we’ll have nothing but decaying soulless villages throughout the country. I live in Dublin, but my industry in based in my home town from where we export to countries all over the world – we’re now the only productive business remaining, as the other three are closing down due to a loss of competitiveness.- no shortage of new houses mind you, most of which are unsold.

I have been criticized fro defending my pensions over 70 medical card.
He is a retired bank manager , who made his contribution to the Celtic Tiger for so so many people.
We are on a comparable pension / income but we were given this medical card for our contribution .
We are paying € 400 on each of three additional residences . and we will now be paying 2% as a levy and additional DIRT on out investments.
We will be paying additional taxes each time we go on holidays . Even our properties in Switzerland and Portugal will now be taxed in addition to our properties in Ireland.
We have been caught every way in this budget.
If the medical card is taken from my husband , we will take the Minister to the High Court to resist this.
We fortunately have the means to do this .
How dare they attempt take this medical from us .
The notion of giving us €400 in place of the medical card is laughable.
If we fail , in our defense of this deprivation of the medical card , we shall simply shift all our assets abroad.
The people who are on medical cards anyway are not contributing to our wealth. What did the people on the dole do for the Celtic Tiger. We have supported them all our lives.
People who lose their jobs should look at their own lives- theey are by and large a worthless lot and should have been sacked in any circumstances; and would have been sacked if we wernt living in an almost communist state .
With regard to the comments here re Opus Dei ; we are both proud members of that august organization.
Those who dont belong to it may have tried and failed – why ?
because they are simply not worth it- they are mostly parasites on society.
