AA Gill in DC

A wonderfully written article about DC by AA Gill. It’s supposed to be a restaurant review but he only gets round to the food in the last paragraph. Well worth a read.

I never thought I’d be leaping to my adopted home town’s defence in any way, shape or form but here I am.

Gill certainly got a lot of his Chernobyl Chicken journos dinner didn’t he? I’d love to see what he’d write about the real city of Washington DC instead of the condemning it out of hand as the life support system for the National Mall.Maybe if he set foot in the ” black service city” he might discover great restaurants and ambiance in the neighbourhoods he,like so many other visitors to my city, miss in their consumption of the monuments on the Mall and dodgy hotel dinners.

You want a good meal in DC? With the exception of the Mayflower you might want to avoid the hotels and head to Adams-Morgan, Dupont Circle, Georgetown and the DC Waterfront. Go to 14th and U st ,Woodley Park or Gallery Place-Chinatown. When you arrive throw a stone in any direction and eat where it lands. It may not be to AA Gill’s standard I suppose but if his palate is as accomodating as his standards of accuracy then you never know.

Oh, and for the record the best pint in DC can be found in O’Brien’s on Connecticut Ave.

Most of Gill’s articles are allegedly food-based, and get to it in the last paragraph.

I have a very nice book containing some of his best articles; unfortunately I can’t think of the name at the moment, but it’s well worth reading.

While AA Gill’s piece made me chuckle, he unwittingly or not, hasn’t got the whole picture – there’s a thriving international scene that makes DC a fantastic place to live and work (I lived there for 10 years and miss it!). The international community brings lots of colour, good looks (ahem), good dress-sense, demand for international food, entertainment – all of which the city provides. It’s a gem – I’m working on returning!
