FAI

OMG

When M came up to bed last night and told me that the HEADLINE news on the 9pm news was that nothing had happened at the hotel, we agreed it was crazy.

But Morning Ireland (not picking on them! maybe Newstalk went mad too but I wasn’t listening). It led all the headlines and sports bulletins and then..

Tony O’Donoghue – 8mins 36secs
John Delaney – 3mins 51 secs
Eamon Dunphy – 7mins 50 secs
Extended sports bulletin interviewing Brian Kerr – 10 mins 24 secs

That’s over half an hour of a two hour show which also includes news headlines, ads, business news, traffic and weather reports.

Is it THAT important?

Oh and its 10:18 and Pat Kenny is still interviewing people. While Suzie Long is last week’s news…..

We live in a country which is known around the world for being predominately Catholic and having great writers.

Last week, an Irish man was elevated to Cardinal, and an Irish woman won the booker prize.

But what were we all talking about? Steve bloody Staunton.

I LOVE football, but to answer your question, no, it’s not that important.

Of course you think its odd Sarah, in your ivory tower everyone is interested in politics. Whereas on the street no-one is.

It must be great to be closeted and intellectual blinded rural middle class, the daily mail reading surrey house wife has nothin’ is positively street in comparison.

Is Ireland the most divided and blinkered society in europe?

    Saray,
Oh but it is important. It’s important because sport is important. A human life can only bear a certain amount of politics. Especially Irish politics with our dull, inept buffoons telling us about “issues” and starting every second sentence with “the reality is”. Once in a while we need to forget all the hacking and blundering that passes for political discourse and free our minds from all the “issues” which no amount of extra airtime will solve. What better way than watching 22 men kicking a chunk of leather around a field with nothing, absolutely nothing at stake. It’s important to our lives because it’s not important. That’s refreshing.

    hmmm. ok. Reasonable point.

I suppose the same reason we seek refuge in music and art. Yeah, I can go with that. I’m sick of politics.

The braying mob and media are scarey when they have a wounded quarry in sight, —the hounds pulling the trapped hare apart in coursing are gentleness in comparison. Can you imagine those hacks slavouring over their kill

if this society qualifies as divided in your eyes, I dread to think what you’d make of the US Leon.

Nice to see that the resignation of Pat Shanahan made it to the third item in the RTE news last night, not too far behind the “The news is there’s no news” lead item. I suppose it got lost in the noise this morning.

Bread and circuses. (Well, plenty of clowns anyway).

Damit missed the programme– Sarah can you fill us in what Eamonn, Brian and John said? You’re right — it’s irrelevent in the grand scale of things but I would probably have gotten a kick of what each of them said.

There is a case for it being important in the way Fintan O’Toole was arguing in the Irish Times — the mediocrity at the top is a characteristic of both the FAI and the political system. Staunton is the scapegoat, given the job by the blazers who still long for the good old days when it was them up in first class on the planes and the mere players down in economy. And of course the FAI, recipient of government cash, never gets any demands for accountability from the politicians.
