So you want to be Taoiseach

Posted in Domestic/Relationships at 10:20 pm by Sarah

Just watched the last of the 3 part series of this programme in which I participated. I must confess, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Ivan Yates was great crack and Terry Prone so on the nail. Mary O’Rourke was hilarious. It was light hearted but everything was so TRUE. You can watch the episodes here.

By the way, tuned into Morning Ireland for more asynchronous political interviews. Liam Twomey on earlier to discuss the new VHI reforms and the later Mary Harney. I’m going to start tracking this. Do government ministers EVER debate directly with a member of the opposition now? Why does Morning Ireland let them do it?

It’s hard enough to get one politician to stick to the point without launching into a political party broadcast, with two it’s near impossible and you never know where you’ll end up (although you can be sure it’s a long way from where you started).

With one politician you only have to deal with simple tactics such as “I’m glad you asked me that”, with two you get bogged down in I-didn’t-interrupt-you-itis or the latest tactic (very popular with Dick Roche) : “Before I answer that I just want to go back to a point that made earlier” at which point they go rambling on about some insignificant detail in a point that the opposition made, and never return to the original question.

weeeeell, fair point, but I don’t think that’s what’s happening. I think the government ministers are refusing to debate directly and the Editors are saying ok.

I look forward to watching the last episode.
    Cheers!
