That EP vote on ER
(translators note: European Parliament vote on Extraordinary Rendition)
Ok, I got the voting document – 68 pages of voting details on various amendments. I decided to skip to the end and see who voted on the final resolution and then double checked back randomly on some of the amendments to check for consistency.
Here are the final results:
FOR (i.e. the good guys)
Coveney, Higgins, McGuinness, Mitchell (all FG), McDonald (SF), De Rossa (Labour), Harkin and Sinnott (Ind).
(Coveney was actually on the committee so 3 cheers etc).
AGAINST (i.e. the toads)
surprise surprise….
Aylward, Crowley, O’Neachtain, Ryan (all FF).
So the notable points are:
Where was Avril Doyle? She is not listed as an abstention so obviously not in the Parliament that day. WHERE was she? We must write and enquire.
Marian Harkin was an interesting vote “for” I thought. I had considered her to be relatively government friendly, but it appears not.
Read some of the report summary – it looks like Poland and Italy are the big baddies. They were in the “definitely actively knowingly co-operating” gang as opposed to Ireland who were in the “What? Planes? In Shannon..nooooooooooooo. Condi said its FINE its FINE AM I going to call her a Liar Noooooooooooo sireeeeeeee. What do you want? Intel to pull out??? Forget about it!!!! Now, don’t we have another manifesto oops sorry! I mean “national plan” to launch somewhere? Yes right, bye now!!!”

Where was Bairbre de Brún- not that I really care to be honest?
I’m surprised you think that Marian Harkin is FF/PD friendly.

You left out Bertie getting a direct assurance from “the Great George Bush.”

I suspect Harkin is trying to insulate/protect herself against a SF challenge in 2009.

She has already said that she intends to stay in Europe. Do you mean a challenge from Doherty? I wouldn’t worry about him. If he doesnt get into the Dáil in May- which I’m confident he won’t- he will never get into Europe, unless there is a pandemic of West-Britishism in the country. That won’t happen.

i read the report friday – not just the summary – the whole report – and it is extradordinarily dodgy.
The section on ireland is wierd in the context of the entire report- of all the countries ONLY ireland is asked to ban CIA planes – not ONE other country not even the ones where they believe prisoners went through are asked to do this! Why only Ireland?
And there is NO evidence presented, or part presented that any prisoners were taken through ireland.
And the 140 odd planes coming through shannon number refers to civil aircraft which MAY AT SOME STAGE may have been used for something dodgy!! Any tru opponant to rendidtion will distance themselves from this report – its so shoddy it will undermine opposition in the long term. Read the report – all of it – before reaching conclusions.

Nope, beg to differ there. The point they make in the report is that planes which they know for a positive fact DID move prisoners from one state to another stopped off at Shannon for refuelling. This is the point Simon Coveney made on the News At One. He never said that it contained a prisoner but that acting as a fuel stop or pit stop we were co-operating. I agree entirely with that. It’s the same as giving a meal to someone on their way to commit a crime. The crime is not committed in our house nor did witness the crime, but by providing fuel we enable it to happen. I will read more of the report though. But it is a nice day so maybe tomorrow.
