Me on the Last Word

Yes, yes I was on The Last Word talking about the continuing rise in the Caesarian section rate with Mike Geary from the Rotunda. Download here, click on Tuesday 5-6pm and fast forward to about 22-22 minutes.

Is Dr. Michael Geary a personal friend of yours or something? Would it have killed you to address him as Dr. Geary even once? :-) I’m all for not putting doctors on a pedestal, but they are experts in their field and that deserves a small acknowledgement. Even if you know him since childhood!

My terribly scientific theory is that more and more women are having caesarian secitons becasue women have become so thin and their body shapes have changed quite a bit. I wonder is their any correlation between lack of hips and the rise in sections! :-)

I think the phrase “too posh to push” sums it up perfectly.

Well I have met the eminent Dr (or is it even Mr – MASTER!) Geary once – I had a long chat with him about the section rate and we have exchanged some emails. I wonder was he disapproving of my informal mode of address? :-)
On the one hand I like him and the other hand he is very defensive about section rates and I think is in the “you have a live baby and a live mother what more do you want brigade?” He never expresses concern about the section rate and didn’t answer Matt’s question about “does it matter”. He never acknowledges that it is too high, just keeps saying “what is it and why?” I don’t like that formal casualness about it.

you know I don’t want too posh to push to be true, but I am starting to think that it might be.
I think you have well off women paying obstetricians big money and they are afraid of childbirth (which is fair enough) and the obstetricians feed their fears with nonsense about big babies and small hips (which is rubbish) and how the section is safer and more convenient. The well off women are used to being in control and want SOMEBODY to be in control and mother nature, who is in control, is too wild and unpredictable for them. So its not so much that they are saying eeeeuw vaginal birth gross, what about my pelvic floor? They are panicky and use their money to control it. But ultimately its bullshit. Getting a baby out of your body and into the world is a traumatic thing. You are better off, as with all things in life, facing it and pushing it out yourself and learning that you did this great thing. Its like passing a driving test. Well if I was rich I could pay for someone to drive me around all the time, or I could buckle down and pass my test. I feel much better knowing I can do it myself, even if taxis are easier. Or something like that.
