Geraghty (2)
Well whatever about the uselessness of FG as an opposition, Geraghty’s nomination is causing hilarious crack down here. The phone lines are hopping. In his favour a certain Cavan-based columnist not known for his love of the Meath team has acknowledged that when Meath would win the all-Ireland Boylan and the players, including Geraghty would very willingly bring the Sam Maguire to schools in neighbouring counties -not just those in Meath – thus allowing some children a view of a cup they would never otherwise see. Certain other counties were not noted for this generosity. Others have noted Geraghty’s steady presence as a volunteer celebrity doing prize givings in schools etc and that actually he is a rather shy gentle type.
Meanwhile, ultra-respectable FGers are horrified that a “bowsie” like him is being muscled onto the party ticket. However a certain Fine Gael inclined petrol station owner has noticed that the most hysterical objections are coming from known FnFers, surely a good sign. When one customer commented, in relation to allegations which Geraghty was forced to publicly deny some years back, that FG were clearly in the gutter if they were resorting to wife beaters as candidates, the proprietor sharply responded, “well it never did Bertie any harm”.
It looks like THE event to attend will be the convention on December 11th. (Members only but GUBU will chance her arm). There are two spots on the ticket to be voted on by members who show up on the day (not a delegate branch system like FF and therefore more difficult to manipulate). English can be assured of one. There are a couple of county councillors with Dail aspirations who will compete with Geraghty for the second spot. However, if the Rasputinesque figure behind Geraghty’s nomination controls things as well as he intends, the nomination will never go to a precarious and unpredictable vote. GUBU would bet anything that the rivals will gracefully withdraw on the night, having been persuaded that in the best interests of the party their ambitions, however grandiose, are unreliasable.

Has he brought the Sam Maguire to schools in the eastern part of Westmeath?
What about the unassimilated Dubs?
