Never having done anything like this before (how many of us have?) I asked for advice and was told 'pick the one you like best' by the Committee chairman (can't even begin to reproduce the accent). There were some wonderful, imaginative costumes, often put together on the proverbial shoestring. So, I made my choice, using my own made-up criteria of topicality, originality, and (completely subjective judgement) the amount of effort required - just as I was about to present the prize (vouchers for the local cash 'n carry, I think), it was made very plain to me that I should have chosen the chairman's precious daughter and that I would need a bodyguard to get to my car parked in the community centre yard. I still cringe whenever I hear the name of that estate on the news!
