 From the Indo today

“ACTOR Ralph Fiennes and his partner Francesca Annis are to separate after 11 years, lawyers for the actress revealed last night. The split comes after reports that ‘The English Patient’ star Fiennes (43), who is currently starring in Brian Friel’s ‘Faith Healer’ at Dublin’s Gate Theatre, had an affair with a young singer…..The 61-year-old actress also announced she has begun legal proceedings against the Daily Mail for defamation and invasion of privacy over a story which claimed she had forgiven him over the alleged affair.

The relationship between Fiennes and Annis was notable for its 18-year age gap.

The couple met when Fiennes played Hamlet at the Hackney Empire in 1995 and Annis played his mother, Gertrude. Fiennes left his wife, ‘ER’ star Alex Kingston, and Annis left her partner, photographer Patrick Wiseman, with whom she had three children….”

Hilarious levels of immorality here. But I just love the fact that it was defamation to say that she had forgiven him! Brilliant. It’s just so twisted I don’t even know how to begin commenting on it.

Well, if proof were needed of the Oedipal subtext of Hamlet’s feelings towards Gertrude, eh? The portrayal by Mel Gibson and Glenn Close was fairly scandalous as I recall. I boycotted Lurpak for a week if you recall.

Of course, in modern thespianism we have the mother-son team of Angelina Jolie and Scanger Farrell.

Captain Picard, aka Patrick Stewart, did the more usual thing.

I was told by a creditable source that the real pronounciation of ‘Ralph’ in Ralph Fiennes is not (Phonetically) R-A-Y-FF, as people contend but, R-E-E-FF. How apt.

Well, on a point of principle I call him RALPH. Feck that other nonsense.
