Important locals comment on new M4

hee hee. Tim rang me yesterday. I must point out that this was because I protested vigourously at the An Bord Pleanala hearing into the road and the NRA oral hearing into the toll. It has nothing to do with my current status as Miss rent-a-comment 2005.

Locals adopt ‘wait-and -see’ approach to M4
Tim O’Brien

Traffic on the N4 through Enfield, Moyvalley, and Clonard was unusually quiet last night, although locals say the real test of the new M4 will take place next Friday when the weekend rush gets under way.

Speaking at her home in Enfield, which overlooks the new road, Sarah Carey said locals had been disappointed with the number of lorries that continued to use Enfield after the inner relief road opened some years ago.

“A lot of the lorry traffic around here is coming from sand and gravel pits so it is local anyway, but we are waiting to see how much of the long-distance traffic will use the by-pass.”

Ms Carey, whose family runs an auctioneer business in Enfield, said she thought commuter traffic would be slow to use the motorway, given that the round trip would add about €5 a day to the cost of getting to Dublin.

“That is a lot of money over a year. I think those people will stick with the old road, but the new road will at least remove some traffic for them.”

btw, Hubby set off this morning on the new road because there was a hard frost and he thought he take advantage of the safety of a motorway. I didn’t get a report yet but mon pere tells me that a local did predict that one stretch would prove extremely dangerous in cold weather as it is very sheltered “and they ploughed through black rock so it’ll attract frost”. Sure enough the AA road watch is warning users of the new road this morning that there is black ice. I thought motorways were supposed to be safe?

yes I know. My Dad featured on LMFM pledging moral support for their protest as they are victims of a private monopoly. When pressed he did admit he would not take actual part in the protest as he is 70 years old and has never taken part in any protest and doesn’t intend to start now.
