Other News
Poor Margaret is dead. How utterly pointless. Killing Bigley, you can almost rationalise, as it placed huge pressure on Blair. But killing Margaret actually relieves pressure on him because her work for Iraqis over 30 years is so well known and it proves the rebels are just animals.
Meanwhile, Willie Walsh and his mates ‘resign’ from Aer Lingus. As they appear to have given 6 months notice its obviously a lame attempt to force the government into agreeing to the MBO which will make them millionaires from OUR company. Screw them. For once I agree with Bertie who doesn’t regret telling them they wouldn’t get rich from a state company.
Meanwhile, a southern black woman is appointed to one of the most powerful positions in the world…but somehow her are politics are not what her demographics might suggest.
Finally, of course the marine was shooting in self defence……….

Crappy RTE news
RTE News is so lame. Paul Reynolds, their crime correspondent filed a report at lunchtime about the arrest of the suspect and the mistress. Its after 9pm and they are still showing the same report. How useless is that.

Band Aid
On a lighter note, this Guardian article on the new Band Aid single is kinda funny. Here’s a quote:
“Glamour, or the lack of it
The modern pop star seems to have lost a great deal of the flamboyant otherness that characterised his/her 80s predecessors. The 84 line-up contained three ill-advised hats, a number of pairs of leather trousers, plenty of daft boots (Sting’s are a particular treat), and several examples of Big Hair. 2004′s Band Aid participants, unfortunately, ooze all the workaday drabness of people dressed by Mark One and The Gap. Then, our stars dressed up; now, terrified that they might be lacking the required streetsiness, they aim down. Shame.”

Awaiting confirmation of suspect
As we await confirmation a friend of a friend of a friend has an alternative theory. The suspect is a family member (either her’s or Joe’s) and Rachel discovered he was having an affair. She threatened to tell his wife so he killed her????
One more thought: In the Petersen case, the papers openly speculated about Scott and widely reported it when he was arrested. We (Ireland) really has very strict laws when the identity of the suspects is still top secret even tho’ they have now been arrested.

Stunning US Victory in Fallujah
I take it all back. Under the direction of the fabulous military strategist Donald Rumsfeld, the US has achieved a stunning victory in Fallujah. Starting with the brilliant theory of providing 8 weeks notice to the rebel/insurgents/terrorists so that most of them could get out and move their rebellion/insurgency/terrorism to neighbouring cities. What a concept! Then move overwhelming force into the city reducing it to rubble. Protect your soldiers by making sure to level houses with tanks before ascertaining who’s inside, you can then claim to have killed 1500 of the enemy and also claim that there are no civilians whatsover in the city and therefore no need to allow Red Crescent Aid in to help them. After all anyone with sense, and who can move, has fled. The infirm and ill were beamed to safe havens ages ago. The comparisons made so readily by the military leaders with Iwo Jima are most appropriate. In that battle 25,000 out of 100,000 US troops were killed. (That’s 25%). A further 10,000 were wounded. Almost all of the 22,000-25,000 Japanese were killed. In Fallujah 38 US Soldiers were killed (eh, 0.3%) but hey don’t forget those 1500 enemy combatants! (any man between 16 and 60? any sign of the bodies?). How grateful the citizens of Iraq will be that the glorious occupier has liberated their flattened city. I guess the people of Mosul can’t wait for similar liberation! The world really is a better place without Saddam!

Alternative Conversations
The scene: A dimly lit, sparsely furnished room. Pungent smell of incense. Large statue of Buddha in the corner. Some flowers. Half a dozen women sit cross legged in a circle. They’ve just been doing some post-hatha yoga chanting, have saluted the earth, each other and the light within themselves (namaste). A final bow and thanks to the teacher. Happy they stand up and chat with animation.
A. (newcomer) to N. (old-timer). “That was great!”.
N. ” Glad you enjoyed it. Sarah, this my friend A. We share an osteopath”.
Me: “Oh who do you go to?”
N. “X. He’s really good”.
Me: “I go to Y. He specialises in pregnancy stuff.”
N. “I’ve heard of him. He’s got a great reputation.”
Me: to J: “How did your Tai Chi go last night?”
J: “Not good. I did not like the teacher”
N. “Who was it?”
J. “C.”
N. “Oh, Dr Dheng, my chinese doctor warned me about him. Says he’s crap!”
J. “Damn. But I’ve paid up now so I’m going to do the course. Are you all signing back up for the next yoga series?”
Me: “Actually, at this stage (30 weeks pregnant) I think I’ve reached my limit. But I’m going to try some Shen Therapy instead with one of the Buddhists here.”
N. “Wow! That’s pretty hard core energy shifting stuff. Let me know how you get on. I was thinking of trying it. The acupuncture isn’t doing much for me anymore.”
Me: “No problem. I’ll report back later. I’ve started meditating again so between the two hopefully it’ll help.”
Mutual goodbyes……

More Evening Herald on Rachel murder
Front page again on the Evening Herald and they must have lawyers crawling all over every word. They actually showed a photograph of the mistress of the suspect – her face fuzzed out getting into her car. The angle today was that she has had other affairs with married men and the police are interviewing all her ex-boyfriends “to try and find out what kind of a person she is”. Clearly this is all with the intention of increasing pressure – and if putting her photo in the paper doesn’t make her crack she must be some woman. Again they emphasise that she has a good job and added that she lives on the southside. I think any of her friends would recognise her at this stage. They also include the fact that the Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy is personally involved in the case with 35 other senior garda and they are determined to get a conviction and say that they are not making an arrest until they have plenty of evidence. But will they get it if the pressure theory doesn’t work?
On the weekend that Scott Petersen is found guilty of Laci’s murder, it makes one wonder. I’ve read all the Scott stuff and I am not entirely convinced that that case would stand up here (in Ireland). It was all entirely circumstantial: the guy had an affair and lied thro’ his teeth about it (and lots of other things). I couldn’t find anything forensic or convincing linking him to the murder even tho’ HE MUST HAVE DONE IT. But in a case where 3 jurors are dismissed, surely that’s very open to appeal?
Finally it is also a bit strange that these developments are being totally ignored by the broadsheets and the RTE. Murders are extremely rare in Ireland (well, outside of terrorism and organised crime) and while I know the Herald is being deliberately sensationalist about this, it is a bit weird that the other papers just ignore it. They haven’t had anything for weeks now. I must check the tabloids.

Look’s like Charlie didn’t do it
It appears I accused Charlie wrongly. Also an unpublished suspect, none other than PI Billy Flynn,(see this link for his work on a more urgent case) could be in the clear. The robbery of the relevant files on Cian from the Equestrian Federation offices in Kill looks like an inside job according the Evening Herald (who clearly have a great Garda informant these days). It appears our Gardai have more skill than we generally credit them with and they took no little time in deciding that the burglary was no such thing and the work of someone on the inside (a similar theory being worked on in that murder case). As the offices are small, their list of suspects was short (i.e. workers in the office) and a woman ‘well known in racing circles’ is being pressed to confess that she took the file herself to blacken Cian’s name (rightly of course as it transpired). Is this a crime? Wasting police time? Would NOT like to be in her shoes tonight. Maybe they’ll take pity on her given that Cian is guilty of far greater wrongs.

The Theatre Dahling
Made my annual trip the theatre avec Leon. He goes regularly and sees lots of bad plays as a result. I go rarely and therefore get the cream, which I think is how Dublin by Lamplight can be categorised. Whilst I read this review post-event, we would concur with its sentiments. While out and about at “Project” (they have dropped the definite article in the theatre’s title) we spotted (or rather I did, Leon is not sharp when it comes to minor celebrities) Alan Stanford and Gavin Friday. Alan (aka George from Glenroe, ubiquitous voiceover and also directs to great acclaim but in a very predictable fashion in my view) wore a big woolly jumper. Gavin looked ridiculous in scraggy hair and dark glasses (Trying to emulate his friend and patron Bono) as well as a long leather coat – very eighties. He and his more cleancut friend repaired, like us to The Stag’s Head, where he appeared most irritated that he was served with no aplomb whatsoever whilst I was greeted by the bar staff like a VIP.
The play was written by Michael West, nephew of Trevor West, former TCD Senator and head of DUCAC, where I was briefly employed. Trevor was very sociable and I got very pissed in his company on a number of occasions. Not sure what he’s up to now.
