Blaming the Frogs

Blaming the Frogs

Let’s get one thing straight. Blair said two weeks ago if one country ‘unreasonably’ vetoed then he would go to war anyway. Last week he said if there was more than one veto he would go to war anyway once there was a majority on the Security Council. So why are they saying that the French threat of the veto prevented them from putting the resolution at all?

The fact is they couldn’t even get a majority. Chile led the middle 6 in saying they wanted more time. Knowing they couldn’t get more than their own 3 votes they just withdrew it. That’s an idea for Bertie, isn’t it? If you think you are going to lose a vote, just don’t have it! No elections for years! And these are the people who say they will bring freedom and democracy to the Arab world. HOW can anyone of any intelligence swallow all this shite????

btw more on Coronation St later.

Robin – I am proud of you.

Here’s Robin’s speech. He looks like a fruit and he was a shit to his wife, but he had the balls in the end. I don’t accept the arguments that he has his eye on the leadership. There won’t be a fall for Blair for ages and when it does come, it will be Brown’s turn. Worst of all, the war probably will be short, they’ll give the Iraqis flags to wave for the televised ‘liberation’ and it’ll look like they were right after all. But I don’t care if it all turns out for the short-term best – its illegal, international, vigilantism and sets a precedent that will be bitterly regretted. It leaves the EU in tatters and the UN in shreds. It is WRONG WRONG WRONG.

Clare – You’ve let me down

Clare – Maybe you think you can do more good in the cabinet. But the least you could do is vote against the government and dare him to fire you. You are letting him off the hook. VERY VERY BAD. Here’s her statement.

While the world watches Saddam….

This is what’s going on in Palestinian refugee camps.

Rachel Corey, a peace activist is deliberately bulldozed by Israeli troops flattening a refugee camp. The Israeli government has been murdering Palestinians without any international condemnation for months now. Israel is in breach of dozens of UN Resolutions and would be in breach of plenty more if the US didn’t veto them. The US/UK complain bitterly when the French lead the opposition to the Iraq ultimatum but they are quite willing to see this kind of oppression which is an international crime take place. Looks like its only ok for the yanks to use the veto.

More on the stupid war later.

World War 2

World War 2

Paul Dunne contacted me to correct my statement that the Nazi’s invaded every country in mainland Europe except Swizterland. He is of course correct and I was aware of the positions of Portugal, Spain, Sweden & Finland. I kinda discounted Sweden and Finland on the basis that they weren’t on the “mainland” (a sneaky qualification on my part) but hey, Finland was an ally so its practically the same thing.

As for Portugal and Spain they got away with invasion by co-operating with Hitler. Switzerland’s shameful record is also under increasing examination. Here’s a detailed article about so-called neutral countries during WW2. They should have included Ireland on the list.

I was reading about Churchill last night. Just after he was appointed PM when the ‘phoney’ war was taking place, he had an opportunity at one point to back out and come to an accord with Nazi Germany which would allow them a free hand in Eastern Europe provided they left the British Empire intact. Churchill won over a fearful cabinet by persuading them that freedom from invasion by ignoring the Nazis was no freedom. He was of course correct. And had Salazar and Franco any moral scruples they would have joined him.

How does this relate to today’s crisis? One connection is this. Bush/Blair keep arguing that the worst case scenario is a split Security Council and that the ‘old European’ axis should vote their way purely to avoid a split since this will irrevocably undermine the UN. Not using the ‘freedom’ to veto Bush/Blair to avoid their wrath (primarily financial) is no freedom. Fear of the cheque book being withdrawn is an immoral reason to abstain or support a war-mongering resolution. The whole concept of the pre-emptive strike is wrong and it is the moral duty, no matter how financially risky, to refuse to recognise this strategy as a legitimate one in world diplomacy.

Come on Frogs! Don’t back down!

I think I’d like to go nuclear

I think I’d like to go nuclear

More war rants. Today’s New York Times illustrates the stupidity of the Iraq policy perfectly.

Story 1. Iraq: This story concerns the 3000 bombs the US plans to drop on Iraq in the first 48 hours of war.
Story 2. North Korea : This story says that the US is going to send 24 planes to fly around North Korea.

note: North Korea; that’s the country that HAS nuclear weapons which it says it will use.

The moral for all ‘rogue’ countries: Get nuclear weapons really fast. It’ll keep the Americans from bombing you.

Americans go anti-French

Americans go anti-French

The propaganda gets more surreal every day. This story is about a Nashville DJ encouraging listeners to vandalise Peugeot cards because of the French stance on the war in Iraq. I can say the war in Iraq because in case you weren’t aware, it has already started. US and British planes are bombing targets in the no-fly zone and 4000 special troops are already inside the borders ‘monitoring’ the oil wells.

The anti-French slogans are typified by the ”If it wasn’t for us, they [French anti-war protesters] would be holding their protests in German,”. Let’s put a few things on the record:

1. The US did not enter WW2 until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour. They had war declared on them – not visa versa.
2. In WW2, Germany invaded or occupied every country in mainland Europe bar Switzerland. That’s a reason for war. Suspecting that someone might attack another country with weapons no one can prove they actually possess is not a reason for war.
3. Saving Private Ryan aside, I think the 20 million Russians who died preserving the eastern front while Eisenhower dithered should get some of the credit for the allied victory.

Still, the few people involved in these acts are so dim that one probably shouldn’t take too much notice. One of them says ”Bush wouldn’t be putting the lives of any Americans in danger if he didn’t think he needed to.”

He needs to alright. His only way of keeping the Republicans in power is too keep the country on a war footing so voting Democrat is seen as unpatriotic. Its brilliant. Shame its also immoral.
